Thursday Thoughts: Calvin Klein x Moonlight

In an age when diversity is increasingly under attack, cultural spheres such as film and fashion are increasingly highlighting and celebrating it. This is particularly true in the new Calvin Klein campaign Revelation which is, in one word, superb.

According the to label’s official campaign release (which EVERYONE should read in full), “celebrating their revelatory performances in the film of the year, we take a closer look at Mahershala Ali, Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders and Trevante Rhodes. They tell us what it means to be a man of the moment.”

Moonlight was a breathtakingly touching film about a “taboo” topic, on multiple levels and across multiple life stages. These actors each brought something unique to their roles, ultimately and thankfully resulting in something never seen before…something unforgettable. Their participation in this ad campaign brings a powerful rawness and genuine authenticity that is hard to deny.

Revelation is the second campaign under Raf Simmons’ creative direction, and it solidifies his reputation as a frontrunner and innovator. Back in April, CEO of Calvin Klein, Steve Shiffman said in a statement:

“The arrival of Raf Simons as Chief Creative Officer signifies a momentous new chapter for Calvin Klein. Not since Mr. Klein himself was at the company has it been led by one creative visionary, and I am confident that this decision will drive the Calvin Klein brand and have a significant impact on its future. Raf’s exceptional contributions have shaped and modernized fashion as we see it today and, under his direction, Calvin Klein will further solidify its position as a leading global lifestyle brand.”

Seeing these ads while walking around New York City constantly brings a smile to my face and reminds me that some people do want to be on the right side of history.
