Tunesday: (Under)Covers

Original singers of the Covered song "Give a little bit."

Sometimes its generational. Sometimes it’s due to exposure. Sometimes its due to ignorance or a sheer lack of musical education.

None of that really matters.

We were sparked by a recent conversation about the socially accepted Goo Goo Dolls’ mis-accreditation for the song “Give a Little Bit.”

Today’s Tunesday aims to enlighten and surprise you with the original versions of covers that are commonly mistaken as originals.

Here are the well known and widely popularized versions.

Here are the originals.

In some cases, the songs take on a completely different meaning or come from another perspective. Me and Bobby McGee was originally about a woman- contrary to the gender-reversal in Janis Joplin’s version. In other cases, these artists have a way of making the same lyrics sound like a completely different song i.e. the two versions of Downtown Train.

Take a listen and compare for yourself. Which versions do you like better? Did you know these were covers?
